End of an Age
Wade Montgomery, Tucker Montgomery
I grew up with stories ‘bout the ghost of boot hill
Teddy Blue Abbot and Scandalous Bill
Them boys are all gone now, them holes have been filled
By bodies of cowboys who left no wills
And some are sadder than hell
You only hear them stories when you’re out on the range
With real old boys on the real old plains
No rodeo riders or farmers of land
Not a singer in a barroom, or an Ag. Businessman
And some are sadder than hell
And I heard this story back when I was a kid
About a crafty wild stallion and he stole mares and hid
They couldn’t kill him
‘Cause he stayed out of range
He was a saber toothed rocket with a human brain
The kind of the plains
Old Tex watched him for many a year
And he followed his hoof steps and learned what he feared
He staked out four geldings, the fastest he had
In twenty mile stretches, ‘cross a hundred mile of land
Gumbo and hardpan
And early next mornin’ he spotted his prey
And he built to the stallion on his horse named Bay
And they jumped two fences as they tore ‘cross the plains
Hazin’ that stallion t’wards the next horse exchange
And he gave Bay the reins
And he got off Bay all lathered and sore
And he saddled up Red and went a’runnin’ some more
Chasing that stallion cross badlands and sage
With the stallion and Tex all caught in rage
Of this horse that won’t cage
The next horse was Buck, when it came down to swap
The hot afternoon sun had old Red ‘bout to drop
Buck was sure-footed and quick on his feet
And they went chasin’ the stallion in the Montana heat
The stud ain’t missin’ a beat
The last horse was Blackie with the sun gettin’ low
And that western horizon beginnin’ to glow
The stallion he stumbled and fell with his pride
But got up a runnin’ and damn how he tried
The he fell and died
I’ve talked about horses but I ain’t mentioned Tex
With blood on his chaps, from the blisters that bled
A hundred miles rnnin’ had taken its toll
That old stud was is hero, his heart and his soul
‘Til now he didn’t know
tex looked on the ground where he died
And a defiant look was still a glare in his eye
The stallion had stumbled and died in the sage
It all represented the end of an age
The end of an age
I grew up with stories ‘bout the ghost of boot hill
Teddy Glue Abbott and Scandalous Bill
Them boys are all gone now, them holes have been filled
By bodies of cowboys who left with no wills
And some are sadder than hell
I Should've Took That Train
Mike Ward, Kenny Williams
In the still of the night, I hear a lonesome whistle blowing
Of a train that ain’t ever coming back
As it rolls through the years, like a lonely river flowing
Flowing down the tracks of my tears
Is it only the wind that I hear
I was standing at the station, with her suitcase in my hand
She was barely 17, I wasn’t quite a man
The porter hollered all aboard, I’ll take that ticket please
I kissed her for the last time, then I turned to leave
Lord, I should’ve took that train
Ain’t never rollin’ down that track again
I hear that lonesome moan of a train that’s dead and gone
Lord, I should’ve took that train
Lord, I should’ve took that train
That train stopped rollin’ through here ‘bout 1969
But laying low and lonely I still hear the whistle whine
I only bought one ticket, though I never left this town
It’s ripped and torn in places, but I still keep it around
In the still of the night I hear a lonesome whistle blowing
Someone Lonely
Mike Ward, Kenny Williams
He left Nashville one morning
On a Greyhound headed home
Such a long lonesome highway
He’ll have to travel alone
He called collect from Texarkana
Said he might stay and look around
I wired him money two days later
To some sleepy Texas town
Someone lonely my way comes
Always a dreamer, the prodigal son
Will he stay, or will he run away
Someone lonely my way comes
I know he’s always been a rounder
Who loves his guitar and a song
It’s been so long since I’ve seen him
Our love keeps me hangin’ on
They closed a pass in Colorado
Such a sadness on the phone
Said he won’t make it home for Christmas
We’ll have to spend it all alone
Back Shack
Mike Ward, Kenny Williams
Ain’t got no dog, I ain’t got no dog house
Ain’t got nothing but a run down half of a chicken shack
Come home seeing double
Didn’t mean to cause no trouble
Now my baby’s got me sleeping
Back in the back shack
Ain’t got no T.V., ain’t got no heater
The chicken wire hides the bottle that keeps me warm
I know I should be freezing, but some things they are deceiving
Baby’s got me sleeping
In the back shack
Back in the back shack
She took the kids in the Cadillac
Back in the back shack
I know she’ll be coming back
I just hang my head and laugh
Back in the back shack
Back in the back shack
Why in the world would she act like that
Back in the back shack
I know she’ll be coming back
I just hand my head and laugh
Back in the back shack
Magic Time
Kevin Welch, Jaimie O’Hare
He pulled into the driveway, his headlights flash across her bedroom wall
He slipped through the screen door, and she glides like a shadow down the hall
The fan upon the ceilin’ whirls around, he moves his hand in front of her
And her black hair falls down
Oh it’s magic time, its magic time
The couple takes the stage
He lights the candle, with his eyes
Music starts to play
Slowly they dance, and then they read each other’s minds
Oooo…It’s magic time
Just outside the window, a night owl screams and flies of towards the porch
She can feel his heartbeat
And he can almost taste her sweet perfume
The wind out in the black jack trees, gently blows
He reaches up in to thin air, and pulls her down a rose
The settin’ moon is sinkin’ low, it shines like a spotlight on her bed
And there a lonely lady, lies awake and she shakes her pretty head
For three nights, runnin’, how strange this dream has been, she blows out the candle
To sleep and dream again
All Night Rodeo
Mike Ward, Kenny Williams
There she stands by the juke box
Playin’ all her favorite country songs
Faded Levis, blond hair and blue eyes
Got her red knee high Paul Bond boots on
Every cowboy has tried to break her
She’s the main event in this here show
When she busts out
And she starts dancing, she’s an all night rodeo
Boys all ridin’ and a ropin’
Wishin’ and a hopin’
They might brand her heart, and take her home
If they don’t get thrown
Cause it takes more than “8,” when she busts out the gate
She’s an all night rodeo
She’s an all night rodeo
She’s an all night rodeo
She’s the queen of all the cowboys
A neon night ride, watch her go
Let her buck, and hold on tightly boy
She’s an all night rodeo
Someday Love
Kostas, Mike Ward, Kenny Williams
One hot summer, long ago
There was a young boy, walkin’ down life’s road
And he fell in love with a pretty little girl
She was the only one in his eyes
And in his heart, and in his world
Summer’s love, and Autumn’s tears
As her feelings disappear
She let go but he held on, to the heartaches and the fears
And memories of the love they shared
Someday love is gonna come your way
Someone special one fine day
Good things come to those who wait
Someday love is gonna come your way
Hey, love is gonna come your way
Well, it’s the same thing we’ve all been through
And it’s the same way with me and you
They way only love can break your heart
Only love can make you blue
And only love can mend it, too
I Plead the Fifth
Mike Ward, Kenny Williams
I plead the fifth
No reason to lie
The bottle is empty
I drank the evidence dry
Can’t tell the truth
Tell who I was with
So why even try
I plead the fifth
I stumbled in about half past three
Baby was waiting up for me
She sat me down on the witness stand
No judge, no jury, just a guilty man
She swore me in, she swore me out
If she has her way I’ll hang no doubt
I spent my whole paycheck honky tonkin’ ‘round
She found those lipstick traces
Now I’m jailhouse bound
Just Be Around
Allen Fauque
Out in the cold, beginning to blue
I need someone to hold, please let it be you
Not lookin’ for love
I’ve just paid my dues
But you control my emotions baby
I don’t get to choose
You don’t have to love me
Just be around to care
You don’t have to love me
It’s just knowin’ that you’re there
You’re turning my imagination
You turn me loose
More than a friend
Not yet my lover
If I could have it all
You’d be my desire
I won’t turn my back
There’s no where to run
But you hold the magic for me
You are the only one
If It Wasn't for the Wind
Joe Fleming, Dave Olney
If it wasn’t for the wind, I wouldn’t know which way to go
If it wasn’t for the moon, I couldn’t see your feelings show
And if your feelings didn’t show, I wouldn’t know where you been
I wouldn’t know which way to go, if it wasn’t for the wind
If it wasn’t for the rain, I wouldn’t know how to feel
If it wasn’t for your touch, I wouldn’t know what was real
And if I wasn’t real, I’d be a stranger to pain
I wouldn’t know how to feel, if it wasn’t for the rain
If it wasn’t for the night, there wouldn’t be any day
And my whole life, I would dream it away
Dream it away, dream it away
Water is cold, in the desert sand
Time is precious, to a dying man
To a dying man, afraid and alone
Love I like gold in his heart of stone
Let It Rain
Mike Ward, Kenny Williams
Dry, dry, dry, as a dust bowl ditch
Ten long years since I took a sip
Baby left this morning the weather’s bound to change
Tonight I’m gonna let this dark cloud rain
Let it rain, let it pour
Let it flood this barroom floor
Let it wash this burning thirst down in my soul
One little drop of pain, and I’m a raging hurricane
Tonight I’m gonna let this dark cloud rain
Dark cloud rolling cross my mind
Wind blowin’ stronger all the time
Cold front passes, from my heart to my brain
Tonight I’m gonna let this dark cloud rain
